Philippe Berta

Philippe Berta is Senior Advisor at DGA Group and is based in Paris. Mr. Berta is a distinguished geneticist, Professor Emeritus in molecular genetics and a renown specialist in rare diseases. He was a Member of the French National Assembly for two legislative terms (2017-2024) in the presidential majority.   

Holding a doctorate in biochemistry and pharmacology, Mr. Berta is renowned for co-discovering a gene on the Y chromosome responsible for determining male sex in mammals. He also founded the “DNA School,” an association aimed at promoting public understanding of biology and genetics. 

Academically, Mr. Berta has had a remarkable career. He worked as a researcher at the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) and later as a research director at INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research). He became a professor at the University of Nîmes, specializing in biology, genetics, biochemistry, and biotechnology. Between 2004 and 2007, he led efforts to transform the University of Nîmes into a fully autonomous institution. 

In 2017, Mr. Berta was elected as a Member of Parliament for France’s 6th constituency in the Gard department, representing MoDem and the centrist La République En Marche coalition. He was re-elected in 2022. As a parliamentarian, Mr. Berta served on the Committee on Cultural Affairs and Education and the Parliamentary Office for Scientific and Technological Assessment. He also played a central role as rapporteur for the Special Committee tasked with reviewing France’s bioethics legislation. 

Mr. Berta’s parliamentary work focused on advancing scientific research and innovation. In 2019, the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation appointed him to lead a mission on making scientific careers more attractive. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he chaired a parliamentary working group to evaluate and promote research efforts related to the virus. 

 After nearly seven years of service, Mr. Berta left the French National Assembly on June 9, 2024. His tenure remains marked by his steadfast commitment to science, education, and public policy innovation.
