John Hughes
John Hughes is a Partner at DGA Group and is based in Washington, D.C. He is Head of Client Strategy, leveraging firmwide capabilities globally to provide clients with integrated offerings to meet their needs.
Mr. Hughes has an extensive track record working on issues at the intersection of geopolitics, risk analysis and strategy across roles in government, the private sector and consulting. Most recently, he was the Head of Geopolitical Engagement at Twitter (X), where he represented the company with governments, multilateral bodies and other key stakeholders around the world.
Previously, he was a Senior Vice President at Albright Stonebridge Group, which became part of DGA Group in 2021 and where he advised clients on market entry and expansion, government affairs, managing risk and addressing regulatory issues. Before that, Mr. Hughes was the Acting Director in the Office of Sanctions Policy and Implementation in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, where he helped set policy priorities for sanctions and export control regimes around the globe.
Mr. Hughes is also an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Energy, Economics, and Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), where he focuses on the intersection of coercive economic statecraft and foreign policy. He has discussed business implications of sanctions and geopolitical issues in interviews with Bloomberg, POLITICO, and The Washington Post among others. He has also been interviewed by several television and radio programs including CBS News, CNBC, and CNN.
Mr. Hughes earned his M.A. in international affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from Colby College.
